APOLOGIES, its been slightly insane lately...between more PT sessions, new PT sessions, and multiple more visits to doctors appointments. All things good...hip pain is getting much better, as in NOT so much pain when running...

So am ready peeps...ready and excited. I recently posted a FB message that sums up this experience-

365 days ago, I crossed my very first marathon finish line!!! The journey to that amazing day has changed my life- made some life long friends, inspired by my coaches, raised money for an amazing charity, motivated some friends to run, drove none running friends insane but more importantly- learned NOTHING is impossible w passion, dedication, and disciple.

That first marathon is amazing, the second was tough, this third one will be one for the record books...WHY because I am going to have more FUN than ever before...soak in the experience and enjoy the journey...

2 Weeks to the day...Got the DR clearance...

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 239px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ghSJNjRUzdg/TMTl1XeHFPI/AAAAAAAAKks/-PnvInlXHSE/s320/IMG_0255.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5531798947313947890" />
If you know me, you know I actually LOVE going to the doctor. Not in the hypochondriac kind of a way...but more in the if SOMETHING is wrong w me, let's identify it, treat it, and MOVE on. So i've gone to 2 doctors, 3 PTs, etc for my hip issue. I was reading a running article and came across a running specific PT place. Called them late August and they recommended I see a specific doctor..who had a 2+ month wait list. AS IF, a lil google action and found out he is one of the top HIP/Joint Docs- he treats the Giants team...LOL...So waited 2 months, spent 3+ hrs at Hospital for Special Surgeries, will likely shell out some serious $$, but finally got his clearance to run. Turns out that I have cartilage tears and damage to both the internal and external right hip joint. This damage causes swelling and then muscle/tissue issues. SO, apparently this cartilage damage is not completely uncommon BUT long distance running is going to be something I want to do...Marathons are going to have to be 1x year...Given that i've completed 2 and about to run another in 1 year...yeah, will DEFINATELY be listenig to doc's orders. So w new PT and a LOVELY high dosage of Anti-Inflamatories...I should be GOOD TO GO...YAHOO...

The diagnosis was kindda funny...yeah, you have done damage...its not uncommon, but at somepoint this marathoning business of mine will come to an end. I was not even sad, disappointed, nothing of that sort. I had recently read a fantastic article about Bart Yasso (for those not running geeks like me)...think running top idol/top authority/has a workout names afterhim...anywho- he recently completed Comrades Run (56miler in South Africa)...he's had to deal w/battling serious illness and decided to make this his last run. He had been putting this race off for years bc he thought he could just do it whenever, but here's the funny thing...time keeps going and before you know it...years go by. He ran the race this year bc he knew his body couldnt wait much longer. I am not doing the article or his story ANY justice but here's the article http://www.runnersworld.com/article/1,7124,s6-243-297--13688-0,00.html

ANYWHO...that's the answer to "WHY DO YOU RUN"...SIMPLE...bc I can...bc at some points this hip will not want to do this anymore..so Dear Hip- THANK YOU for letting me run through streets of NYC, Paris, Philly, DC, and for 2011- Berlin, New Orleans, please hold up :) I LOVE the running experience and for the time being I can still run and will do so.. :)

Anywho Blog PEEPS: Asics has come up with a FANTASTIC way for you to send your LOVE and support. You can personalize messages to me and they will be loaded to the large screens along the marathon course...SO DO IT NOW....

http://supportyourmarathoner.com/

you will need to include my registration number 526386

I Broke Dooooownnnn

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 256px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ghSJNjRUzdg/TLu5pIcbDKI/AAAAAAAAKkg/3Q8kry42XWw/s320/worry.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5529217083819887778" />
So kids...after thinking I got my Mojo, running spirit back- I was WRONG!!

We ran our last 20miler this weekend as a team. We woke up at a lovely CRACK of dawn, loaded a yellow school bus, and headed to Manasquan Park in NJ. All week I had been afraid of this run. It has been almost a full month since my last long run, had some good runs but somehow hurt my knee in last weekend's Staten Island Half Marathon. I thought the nagging pain was annoying but the mental damage was MUCH more debilitating.

I felt something odd around mile 8 of last weekends half and then sharp pain. I walked it for a bit but just wanted to get it done and pushed through the pain. On and off the pain would come back. I finished that run in a respectable time given all of the injuries and over training I faced this year. Took Sunday and Monday off and ran on Wednesday without pain. But throughout the week I kept feeling some pressure on my knee...not pain but pressure. PT and coaches assessed the injured knee and concluded weak muscles and constant strain was leading to the pain..but nothing major. Weak muscles can be rehabbed by strength training but a weak mind/spirit...I found out yesterday is MUCH tougher to pull together...

So there we were..in NJ running our last long before the marathon. It was an absolutely perfect running day-cool, slight breeze, and some sun. A beautiful park embarking on what we had done time after time...run. We were going to complete 4, 5-mile loops around a reservoir. Jackie and I decided to follow our own pace and set out on our adventure. The first loop was fine, the body was warming up, so the usual aches and pains were there. The second loop was ok...and there started the downfall. My hip kept annoying me, the pain was consistently moving (a good sign apparently) and my knee was annoying me. And somewhere around mile 8-9 I made a TRAGIC mistake...allowed IN the negativity. I started with "my body is falling apart, this pain is annoying, I should have taken more time off after the first NYC, why did I run Paris, what do i think I am a marathoner?, like so much else in life...u are falling just short." ETC, ETC, ETC...and there i was at mile 12, taking my 2nd gu...crying, hyperventilating, and having a COMPLETE emotional breakdown...I was literally on a running ledge...and there I was at the 12th mile...I had gone further countless times but for some reason I couldnt even imagine the next mile- let alone another 8 miles. LUCKILY i had my buddy Jackie...who w the tough love I have used on her many times...told me "there is no crying in baseball"...so you are in some uncomfortable pain...if its serious then stop but otherwise SUCK it up and just run"

As so...i kept running, still breaking down...not crying bc I was afraid of tripping on the road. I had open my personal pandoras box of self-doubt and fear and fought w my inner demons for the next LONG, LONG 8 miles. Jackie would attempt to lighten up the mood with some comment about "Jersey Shore"..and i would just bark something back about pain...I was breaking down harder til she mentioned that we were doing the same pace as the beginning of the run..and so there we were mile 18...ghh, MAN o MAN..i HATE mile 18...but I saw several team members who were struggling out there on the course and they still had a loop to go. Jackie reminded me of the article of the Ecuadorian Woman who won the Buenos Aires Marathon last weekend-who had to sell her living room furniture to buy vitamins and often didnt have enough money to eat and how her win in BA was going to change her life ( http://www.elcomercio.com/2010-10-15/Noticias/Deportes/Noticia-Principal/EC101021P21_CHACHA.aspx )..What was I possibly complaining about. ALL i would have to do was get through another 2 miles...22 mins or so of running to mark the end of an AMAZING 18months of hard training and one last hard push before the marathon. These 18 month have brought me to MUCH...all of which I have spoken about here- new friends, new passion in life, taught me about determination, disciple, and dedication...but most of all..it has taught me that through it all...the words impossible and quitting are NO LONGER part of my vocabulary.

I finished the run and this morning woke up and felt little soreness. Whatever I was feeling yesterday was likely 10% physical pain..the rest mental...and through the beautiful-yet empty grounds of Manasquan...I shed all those demons I've been holding back since the Paris Marathon. I know that the next time the physical pain comes back...I will be running the streets of NYC w/ friends, family, and complete strangers encouraging me but more importantly the space that the mental demons left are going to be filled with some of the most unbelievable memories of an amazing day...

A running weekend...reflection and so much more

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 256px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ghSJNjRUzdg/TLO9LVqQgxI/AAAAAAAAKkU/JlJ2iScobIA/s320/worry.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5526969170204328722" />
I was talking to a coworker on Friday someone who doesn't really know me well, she asked what I was doing this weekend. My reply: hmm nothin much, just a little running. We got to talking and she laughed at my lil running is in fact a half marathon.
This past weekend was the much coveted 10/10/10! Some people get married, some plan other monumental activities- I and a lot of my friends on the other hand- RUN! Lol.

Yes, we run pretty much every weekend, but race day is particularly awesome. So as some of my friends embark on their marathons, 18milers around LIB, Half marathons, or the last of the long runs- I started this blog from the gym, on a bike, warming my body up for the 10 minutes of foam roller and then 10 of torture in the awesome ice pool. Here's my secret- am jealous that I am not able to run more long runs. Lol- insane, I know. There I said it. There is nothing sexy about the long run-no crowds, tv coverage, expo selling all things running related. Its just you, maybe a friend or coaches, and the road. I think its a pretty humbling experience to be honest.

In training for a marathon, us mortals will do 2 to 3 20+mile runs. More often then not, we will never run the full 26.2. But despite its plain Jane of runs status, it's a like a girls scout badge. You earn the privilege of the marathon after completion of the Long runs. This year I feel like I am cheating a bit. I will only do 2 20+milers and have brought down the remaining runs til marathon Sunday. It's for my own good but still feels weird. A friend said recently summed it up best-" it kills me to remember where I was physically last year, and know am no where near that." I try no to dwell on it, because then why even run. But it's important to address the pink elephant.
Recently I was asked if I was ready for the marathon and I would say-I am better prepared for this marathon than the two previous ones. Why you ask?

Last year was all about building my physical endurance- making sure I had it in me to bring out those last miles. This marathon is more about mental endurance and spiritual balance- I am sure a bunch of you just busted out laughing. I am not exactly the poster child for spirituality or even tap into my emotional side that much but it is true. So laugh away, I did also. Lol.

I may not be physically 100%- but have learned to refocus my preparation and have gotten more out this marathon than I could have ever imagined.

Luckily for me, I follow the lives n careers of some awesome elite athletes. This year the world of elite marathoners has experienced some life changing events. My girls Kara and Paula put their running careers on the side to become mothers. My boy Meb shared his amazing story of what is means to be an American and what it took to rebuild him after debilitating injuries. And most recently Ryan Hall wrote the most honest blog about his decision to drop out of Chicago. These men and women are my running superstars and idols, not only for their super human running abilities but more so for their willingness to share their doubts, fears, and disappointments-they want to share their human side. In marathon running, you feel connected to these superstars because at some point in a marathon- like last years NYC- we shared the experience of running through this crazy city

Runners World noted in a recent article that the allure of a marathon is partially due that as an average person you get to run the same course as these elites. You laugh but I will prob never be able to play in a World Cup game, throw a football in a Superbowl game, or be out in the field when my beloved Phillies win the World Series. But on Nov 7th, I will be out in that course w Meb and Halle, running the mother of all marathons NYC. So that is why i am upset on not running more long runs- i feel like i am cheating. But the words of these elites have helped me prepare for the emotional side of marathon running. In many ways we have shared experiences. They have all had to deal w the pink elephant. They will likely never know my name or that i even exist but they have helped me get throw a rough marathon and personal season.

So why am I ready? Because I was just able to write those mushy/emotional words. Because I know my body will be ready for those 26.2miles- I've done it twice- I know what to expect n am ready for the challenge. More so because i am running with a new and deeper purpose. Am running for fun, because its a sport i love and to give kids the life altering experience I have shared with you all.

So, Pink elephant (running injuries and personal doubt and disappointment) you have NOTHiNG!! i know you will show up on Nov 7th. I welcome you. We shall meet on the Pulaski Bridge, 59th St Bridge, Harlem, the Bronx, and Harlem again. But know this- NYC marathon is not my first rodeo. So I had to take a new training course (perhaps even "cheat" on my training schedule) but am on the same path- up 59th St to Columbus Circle, into Central Park, and then up that grueling hill to Tavern on the Green on to the Finish Line- a few hours after Meb or Halle!! Lol.

Got my Mojo BACK!!- 33 DAYS...THIRTY THREE

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_ghSJNjRUzdg/TKqbfxKImII/AAAAAAAAKkI/scZQk3510FA/s320/IMG_4843.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5524398862997428354" />
Hi Blog Peeps!
If you are reading this, THANK YOU!! This lil blog has been a virtual confessional- not like I have been to confession since 4th grade but I digress. But yes, this lil blog of mine allows me to say all the things I may be thinking and feeling but feel like I can't say out loud. So thanks for reading this and really following what this experience is all about.
Peeps- got my groove, my mojo, my running essence back- ok a bit DRAMATIC. Lol. Anywho this past weekend ran Greta's Gallop, a lovely little half marathon around Central Park. If you've ever run in the park you know the loveliness of Harlem Hills. Am not sure about the slope or anything, just know that on many occasion I often burn my energy going up those hills. So when this race slowly showed up on the running calendar, I knew what I was going to do- NOTHING.
Well, not exactly. On this ever quest to find my running identify, have made a considerate effort to bring FUN back into running. This weekend was just that. Did the usual pre-long run dinner, but not the breakfast or lunch...AS IF...Didnt obsess about my PB Bagel in the am...and didnt even do laundry so that i would have my race day running gear, socks, etc. WHY you ask? Was i just turning lazy? No, not really...just stopped obsessing about EVERY little detail of this sport..Just decided to go out and RUN...I mean, it is me...so I did lay out all of my clothes the night before, prepped my bag for the next day, got my recovery drink-chocolate milk.
So beyond ignoring the usual OCD activities, I relaxed and chilled out. And guess what...running was FUN again...i know, can running be fun...sure V...u are insane. BUT it was...chatted w Jackie, came up w some new games, saw some new CPHs, made some friends, thanked the volunteers, chatted w our coaches..and guess what RAN a fast last 2-3 miles...I remembered why i ran in the first place...BECAUSE it was FUN...that an the ability to eat wings @ Dinosaurs wo guilt :)

DID YOU DONATE yet....we have less than $200 to go..

If you have ever wondered....

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_ghSJNjRUzdg/TKK4VsVh_SI/AAAAAAAAKj8/5BO-CbrjtPk/s320/marathonblanket.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5522178775927880994" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 218px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_ghSJNjRUzdg/TKK3MsMtjoI/AAAAAAAAKjw/2Fi0FlhHWRM/s320/INGmarathon.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5522177521760439938" />
What running a marathon would be like...you can get a glimpse-courtesy of Asics' amazing marketing/ad team. Thanks Jacks for finding this....

http://www.asicsmarathon.com/en/marathon/index.html

My Favorite quote: After the Finish Line- the Pain will Stop....Ohh HOW true that is, HOW TRUE...the goal for the next 5 weeks...STAY and get HEALTHIER....

Recent news in the marathon pros- Ryan Hall has dropped out of the Chicago Marathon...there's a lot of controversy re: his decision. An elite athlete drops out bc he doesnt feel he's up to his potential. Some people feel he is a quitter, others understand his move...My heart goes out to him...If you have ever faced this decision...pro or otherwise...giving up on something you've worked for months/years is beyond hard...

If you read my post Philly Half Marathon, you know I saw Ryan Hall run the Philly Half. He had a less than great run, in fact he placed 14th, after winning the same race the year prior. It made me think how difficult this decision must be and how lucky I am that I run for fun, and not as a pro. I mean, clearly that's what's holding me from turning pro...not the fact that these guys run their full marathons in what i dream of running a half..LOL...ANYWHO...this SUCKS for him or any other runner who has ever made that decision. Earlier this season- i have to admit....I thought about doing the same. The hip/hamstring pain was so intense that I could not imagine running a full marathon. So what kept me in the game- stupidity? stubborn determination? commitment to the team?...Not sure. I made a deal w myself; if the doctors recommended i not run....then i would not. LUCKILY, and i am touching wood...i am getting back to health and the doctors continue to give me the green light..

This is the point in marathon training where peeps start getting hurt, when the pain you've ignored starts to not go away, when the mind takes over and starts questioning all of the hard work you've put on for the last few months. This is my Thank you to my doctors, PTs, Xrays techs, coaches, running partners...all those who have helped me rebuild my silly hip/hamstring and more importantly...helped rebuild my running confidence-the mental aspect of this sport is beyond tough. I run for fun, health, and happiness...(not to mention to forgive my love of wings.)...this is a privilege...

39 days PEOPLE...39 DAYS...Something about seeing the pix of the verrazano on marathon sunday that keeps me wanting to do this over and over....

A weekend "free" of running

TFK ran the 2nd of 3- 20mile runs, and guess what I DID NOT. Yes, you are reading this correctly I did NOT do my homework, ignored the training schedule, and any other marathon schedule...I DID NOT DO a long run this weekend. GASP...
After almost 18months of marathon training, I finally took a "break". It was kindda weird- the team, my friends were all running long this weekend and I was going to do 8miles. Now, I understand that about 2 yrs ago 8 miles WOULD have been a long run but on my way to my 3rd marathon-it is a TREAT. After running the Philly half, my legs had a hard time recovering. I consulted my running board of directors, and all agreed a break was in order.

It was weird glimpse into what my life will be like when I take a little break from Marathon Running...

Friday night- I could actually enjoy a little VINO...ok, ok, not like I have COMPLETELY cut alcohol but still. Since our girl Alicia was running 20 on Sat, we still had the obligatory turkey meatballs, spaghetti, and bread. Though, MUCH smaller portions.

Saturday- Jackie and I started our run @ closer to 8am..which is SUPER late for prime marathon running season. It was kindda nice not to get up so early that you see the peeps all over the UES still stumbling home.
My body DID NOT want to run, my legs felt as if they were filled with cement. I threw a lil bit of a temper tantrum- yes I am a 32 year old woman :) Luckily Jackie told me she would buy me chocolate milk if I behaved and ran wo acting like a 2yr old :)
So we did a lovely little run on the briddle path. Saw a bunch of CPHs (Central Park Hotties) though not as many bc they were undoubtly doing their long runs outside the park. There is only SO many times you can circle the briddle path before you start hating the park...BUT back to the point..
We were supposed to do 8 miles, but at around mile 7...we decided to call it quits. Mainly because we were tired, but then again I went to Darryl's AMAZING spin class. Now explain how a 7 mile run and a HARD 45 min spin class is a "BY week" in running- its called Marathon training..

Somewhere between that 7mile run and Spinning to some techno version of "Living on a Prayer"... I realize that I keep trying to relive 1st marathon feeling- the crossing the finish line back on Nov.1, 09, high fives throughout Brooklyn, a bus-ride to Staten island with some of the most INSANE and AWESOME Team mates/friends, seeing my friends on 1st and 5th aves...Reality though-I will NEVER relive that moment, it was unique. I keep describing this to those who are running their first time marathoners.
The NYC Marathon is a special, special course...only those who have run know what i mean...a marathon is a marathon...but the NYC marathon is an undescrible experience..

Anywho, I spent the rest of the weekend w my TFK girls...Hit the ice pool @ Equinox w Jackie and introduced this torture chamber to new TFK girl Victoria- our fisty Brit. Dinner/Drinks/Dancing w 2009 TFK girls. We all toasted to the Briddle path- there we were looking cute (as opposed to how we had spent many a meal..sweaty n smelly), catching up over yummy mexican (instead of brunch food, bar food, or post race meals of bagels/fruit/and water.) Catching up on each others lives, sharing and creating new memories. We learned of our passion for Sunday-football funday and met at a local bar to part take in this Sunday ritual. So I was prescribed a weekend free of running...but I ended up surrounded by all this that began w this lil hobby/passion/obsession-RUNNING.

I've been running marathons for the better part of the last 2 years. Thinking about my lil hiatus from marathon training IS SCARY but I am looking forward to this lil Marathon training break...Now, let's pray i DO NOT get into London 2011 bc that might put a wrinkle on that plan...ANYWHO...
If this weekend was a preview of what life might be like...pretty awesome... I know all of you who read this and are not part of my running inner circle are probably saying DUH, HALLELUJAH...We might get her back....LOL...
BUT dont think i'm giving up running all together..going to concentrate on the half marathons...LOL...hey, if you though this running thing was a phase...not so much so...it's part of my life in a way that can't be measured by training schedules, numbers of completed races..etc..

But I am getting ahead of myself..I still have FIVE weeks til NYC Marathon, just watching the video above makes me all giddy...from this week on...no more breaks...time to buckle down...and PS- did you donate yet?? ;)

FORTY-SIX Days....46!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And to losing yourself completely, in order to find yourself at the exact same time.” New Balance Ad.

The irony of selecting that quote as the lead into my blog entry is even more hilarious today than had I posted it prior to this past weekend’s Philly Half.

Let me explain- for the avid readers of my blog (I know it's almost all of you) haha!!
Anywho, those who have been anywhere near me know that I got bit by the running bug
during and after the Philly Half Marathon 2008. Here’s the shocker/punch straight to
the gut-I actually ran the 2010 race a WHOLE 8 minutes slower than in 2008. HOW IS
THAT POSSIBLE?

I’ve already talked about the whole running is bad for OCD/A types like me- measure
EVERYTHING. So to think that 2 yrs later I’m at the exact same time (read above) or
in reality 8mins slower..lol!!! I laugh about it now- but I had a bit of a breakdown on Monday- but I was quickly reminded by my AWESOME coach Brian and running buddy
Jackie...GET over it and I am a different person and runner… A LOT has changed and
some things have stayed the same.

I’d like to consider myself an SME (subject matter expert) for those starting to run. I figure 2 yrs later, I should have picked up a thing or two. When I ran the first race-I knew close to NOTHING…here were the rookie mistakes and some I still repeated

1) 2008-Ran my last long run on the Monday before the Sunday race. 2010-Ran my
20miler 7 days before the half…SILLY RABBIT.
2) 2008-Eat SOOO many carbs- I learned DURING the run the impact to ur stomach...I will not elaborate but you get the picture 2010- Didn’t eat enough…tank hit E (empty early)
3) 2008-Ran w some cheap Nike watch, couldn’t keep time. 2010- Pimping Garmin
FAILED ME at mile 1…Couldn’t keep pace/time...Good to know the $$ was a good investment
4) 2008- Ran freely, ran at my own def of "fast"…2010-Ran freely, resulting in running WAY too fast out-somehow seeing Ryan Hall @ my mile 1 and his mile 4 made my legs move faster...result: started too of the box and for the first time what happens when your legs DIE…It was an interesting experience
5) 2008- Tried GU for the first time @ mile 9..NOT SMART. 2010- Tried Cytomax
for first time while on the course NOT smart

I’m sure that there are more and i could continue my sorry explanation as to why i ran slower...but why bother. Here's how i EARNED those extra 8 minutes :)

1) I have completed two awesome marathons. An accomplishment beyond my imagination.

2) A much healthier lifestyle. One where working out isn't about fitting into the "perfect" pair of jeans. But rather workout because I enjoy it. Ok,ok. So maybe not always "healthy". Hey beer is a carb and I need to carb load.

3) Commitment to something that seemed so impossible. Nothing seems impossible once you've crossed a marathon finish line. Life's challenges are the mile markers on the road, you just keep checking them off. You learned to tap into something deep and motivate yourself when all you want to do is quit.

4) Commitment to something bigger. I found a charity I support and do something about. When those kids meet us, sometimes I feel like they seem disappointed bc the TFK members seems like ordinary people you would see on the subway. But once we are out there running- they tell us how we making a difference in their life-that alone is worth it. They know we are out there putting in the training for our big event on 11/7 but more so to raise funds and give them something bigger.

5) Have some new celebs- Kara, Paula, Bernard, and most recently MEB!! All amazing runners, who more importantly have amazing stories and share their struggles with this demanding sports. While I play it cool with Hollywood types- I act like a complete moron when I met these guys...

7) meeting and making new friends!! I never would have thought that the peanut gallery of runners who met on the Briddle path last year would come to mean so much to me. We shared in a life changing experience an now continue to share in so much more. NYC is one tough town, often lonely. Since running I have never felt alone! There's always a familiar face on the briddle path.

Lastly and most importantly sharing this awesome experience with my friends and family. From seeing my support team at mile 16 as I was approaching the Wall during NYC Marathon, my co-workers always willing to raise a toast for charity at one of my benefit HH, joining me for the multiple number of training runs, seeing more and more friends pick up this lil hobby..the FB posts of support, endless conversations about the experience, traveling to Paris for a lil running :) and so much more. These memories are FUN and bring a HUGE smile to my face EVERY time.

So I'll take my additional 8 minutes ANY day...I've gained a lot more...that being SAID...dont count me out JUST yet. After all, I did loose a bet and had to wear a HUGE sombrero on Football Sunday...so DO over...I am competitive after all...

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://vanerunsnyc.blogspot.com/2010/09/forty-six-days46-thinking-about.html' title='FORTY-SIX Days....46!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This past weekend, i was FINALLY able to run the scheduled mileage. So success!!!!! Not exactly the fastest/best run ever, but I will take it. Have to admit probably couldn't have been able to finished had it not been without Jacks-shout out CHICA. Course- Cadman Plaza, Brooklyn Bridge, South Street Sea Port, Battery Park, West Side HW, GWBridge Lighthouse, back down to 72nd st. Weather- AMAZING, most beautiful day. Body- held up perfectly til mile 16 when the the hamstring/derriere started acting up, hit mile 19 and WOW pain...luckily Jacks kept telling these insane stories, as i tried to hold it together and fight back tears. Let me explain the tears... Yes, I was in pain- but at mile 19 everything hurts. The tears were partially due to the increasing pain, but it was also due to the fact that i KNEW if I made it through 20miles i could CRAWL the last 6miles of the marathon. I am confident that w the team of specialists by my side- i will RUN this baby. Shout out to PT, Masseuse, Chiropractor, Spin Instructors, guys @ JackRabbit, guys @ Urban Athletics, the bagel guys, my poor friends who have to deal w my marathon obsession for yet another year, MY AWESOME and i MEAN AWESOME coaches and team mates...SO NO CRAWLING...but its out there. Note to those reading this...if you see me crawling on first avenue, quickly walk to the nearest bar-order a shot of chilled silver patron and all good...

Someone asked me today how long I had run for...yeah NO idea. It wasnt about time, all about making it through. Been reading "Born to Run"- YES a running book, but its changed the way I approach this training season and life's lil challenges. The motto- NO FEAR, NO DOUBT. I approached this run, much more relaxed...I would run to pain, once it came on strong, i would drop out...

Scared-
The 20mile run reminded me MAN...26.2 miles is a LONG, and i mean LONG time to be running or doing anything really. Luckily, I have an ability to talk to the wall if needed, which is important as you approach the 4th hour of consecutive running. But as books and quotes say...if it were easy everyone would run the marathon. You NEVER know what ur body will feel like doing the day you wake up, luckily for me it was GREAT. But as the New Balance Ad states: "There are limits to what the human body can endure. Go find them." So i'm out to find my limit, so far so good. A lil bruised and hurting but know i have yet to find the limit.

WHY, WHY-
If I had a penny for every time I am asked that question. There is no answer to be honest. Somedays, I can say I run bc I had ONE too many buffalo wings w beer. Otherdays, its a stress relief, reason for buying more spandex???? I could go on and on. The answer evolves, but I am running the NYC marathon to raise money for Team for KIDS....So, if you have not sponsored me as yet- please consider sponsoring me per mile. Think of it this way, come that 1st Sunday of the year- you will be resting, watching football, enjoying some "beverages" and I will be out there on those AWESOME NYC streets running 26.2 miles. BUT together we can transform the lives of children THROUGH running.

Ok peeps...besos...i PROMISE more and MORE blog updates in the days to come.. :)

Why I run...

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 149px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ghSJNjRUzdg/TH8cT3ehzsI/AAAAAAAAKhs/HMP6mBCyWEc/s320/uae.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5512155596559863490" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 143px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ghSJNjRUzdg/TH8cTqJ7q1I/AAAAAAAAKhk/csGf5uAFDTk/s320/grp.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5512155592983817042" />
Hi all-

I wanted to share with you some pictures and quotes from the children that TOGETHER we are helping transform their lives through running. So take a moment to read some quotes and stats.

FROM NYRR:

1 in 3 American Children will develop Type 2 diabetes.
92% of elementary schools don’t have daily physical education classes.
Childhood obesity rates have more than tripled in the past 30 years.

Meet Andrianna

Andrianna is a 14-year-old girl who’s a member of one of our Young Runners teams in the Bronx, the NYC borough with the highest obesity rates.

Last fall, Andrianna transferred to a new school and had a hard time making friends. The other girls made fun of her for being tall—her long legs made her stand out—she wondered if she’d ever fit in.

Then, she found our Young Runners program at her school. In her own words, “in Young Runners, I have friends who not only love my personality but who also push me to do better.” The best part? Her long legs are an asset as she speeds through her miles and her teammates cheer for her!
Make the Connection

At New York Road Runners, what began as a small effort to help 15 children at one New York City school has blossomed into a national and international effort to transform the lives of tens of thousands of children, many of whom have no access to the regular physical activity they need to live healthy, productive lives.

Through our primary initiatives— Young Runners and Mighty Milers —we’ve established running-based programs that promote children’s physical fitness, character development, and personal achievement in underserved communities in NYC, across the country, and around the world.
Your Dollars at Work

Our programs are provided free of charge to the schools and communities that need them most and are changing the lives of children like Andrianna every day. As a result of our donor-supported programs, Andrianna now has a support system that’s helping her get healthier, build confidence, and prepare for success.

How you might be able to help us extend these benefits to children in need?

Donate: Your gift of $50 will provide a child with access to our Mighty Milers program for one year.

SIMPLY follow the donation link above!!!!

The Ugly Side of Running......

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ghSJNjRUzdg/THx70kwZovI/AAAAAAAAKhY/PnGPYYtGZd4/s320/DSC04178.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5511416187144741618" />
Yeah, so those who know me...i'm a walking ambassador of marathon running, why its good for you, how it changed my life, etc... 90% of the time, i LOVE running...then there's the 10% So here's the reality- sometimes it just REALLY SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!

OK...so it doesn't exactly suck, but there's a dark side. Let me explain in steps

1) Injuries...MAN ohh Man- injuries are rough. It's tough to face that your body doesn't or can't keep up with what you want to do. I had my first DNF (Did Not Finish) race- this past weekend. It was the first long run of marathon training season-16miles. I've been nursing a hip/butt pain since the Paris Marathon. I've seen a doctor, countless visits to PT...it comes and goes, but this past saturday- it came back and with a vengeance. In Marathon training there's going to be pain, it's simply part of experience, but THEN there's the ohhh, boy..this is NOT good pain. I felt it from mile 1- which I attributed to a poor warm up. Mile 3-4 goes on and its getting better-we do Harlem Hill and I survive. Miles 5-8 are ok, feel better. Miles 9,10,11- WOW my body was HURTING, I feel my hamstring so tight I feel its going to snap like a rubberband, following sharp pain in the hit/butt. At the end of mile 11, I saw coach Bri and said...i cant, i cant and dropped out. STAGING DIRECTIONS- how to Mental Breakdowns

2) Mental Breakdowns- Running is possibly even tougher on the mind. Any emotion that I am feeling comes out on the road. When the body goes- the mind flips out. There's the famous "wall" during the marathon- usually around miles 18-20, when then body is approaching the normal thresholds of pain. The brain kicks in and tells you- MORON why are you doing this? I am in PAIN...just STOP, STOP...no really you cant go on. I had tears, hyperventilation, desperate need to see my mother. This past Saturday was a perfect example...Mile 1- slight pain...mind- ohh boy, you have to take it easy, this is NOT good/PROCEED with caution. Miles 3-4..ohh, I feel pain but we are doing HILLS, i LOVE hills...Miles 5-8, my body might be recovering this isn't that bad. Miles 9-11, SPIRAL into the deep dark places... You are not caught out for this sport, what is wrong with you, OMG-I cant run 16miles, how can I run 26.2, you consider yourself a runner and cant make 2 loops of Central Park...you are failing at something once again...what are you doing with your life, you cant even finish this. And on and on...STAGE Directions...Aftermath

3) AfterMath- So your brain is playing games with you and the confident you is battling the self conscious-12 yr old girl. UGLY battle.. Wow...yeah, all that while running or afterwards. The afterwards is actually slightly worse. Look at the picture...that was me, in the aftermath zone, not looking and eating some dirt during a trail run. It took me a while to get over running on dirty...On Saturday, I was lucky to have Coach Bri and some of my team members. Coach assessed the hamstring and agreed, pulling out it was the right decision. Despite knowing it was the right move, it didnt feel good...I spent the rest of the day chatting about it all.

4) Metrics- So for A-type personalities like myself running is DANGEROUS. There are so many ways to measure performance- miles, time, splits, race comparisons in time, splits, etc. Marathon training programs alone are a roadmap into an obsessive numbers game...

YET- I went back to practice today, after spending a weekend of ice baths, stretching, foam rolling, triggerball working on the hip...and had a nice lil run. Here's the difference- i worked on Shutting up 1-4 from above. I started w my team but decided to run on my own for a change. The run reminded me why I run- it was FUN, at least it used to be. I started running bc i needed a distraction and it made me feel powerful- how did i end up back to pre-teen like self-doubt...i KNEW i needed a change...running out in the park was JUST what i needed...

Was my hip pain there? Yup, perhaps more a sore muscle...still felt it. But just when i was obsessing about it, i ran by a lil boy who was practicing running with his one leg and a brand new prosthesis allowing him to run. YEAH, reality hit

mind was racing- what i'm i doing w my life, what if i cant run the marathon...etc. Ran into Coach Frank who reminded me...this was a temporary setback. True, and I better get used to them as LIFE is full of them, get over myself. If this what i worry about-life is good

I DID NOT look at my watch- not for a second...ok, maybe a lil bit only to find out i was run at my old marathon pace...but then said, NOPE...Dont look..why measure everything-what's the point...sill need to get to base camp. Kindda like my what i'm i doing w life- i'm 32 and still havent done <fill in the blank>, metrics..what's the point?

So to be fair-not like i'm back to my happy, bubbly self. This OK run was not some sort of "Eat, Pray, Love" like moment of running or anything. I'm not- i'm def scared to see what happens with this hip/butt...BUT maybe i just need to go back to the basics...and enjoy running for what it was...FUN, Personal, and simple...let's see how this goes :)

NYRR Half Marathon Grand Prix..say WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!

I cant exactly remember when I made that silly decision to do the 5 Borough Grand Prix something about free shirt, certificate, maybe a medal. Didn't know much about it...other than that it would require me to a series of Half marathons all over NY.
Those of you who know me, know that I tend not to venture outside the Borough of Manhattan- SAD i know... SO what better way to get to know more of NY than run through it...So here is a brief summary...

Manhattan- 37Degrees, 2:09, 1/24
COLD, COLD, COLD, COLD....This was part of a training run for the Paris Marathon. Two loops of lovely Central Park in the the bitter cold. Dont remember much, other than running the back loops of central park, in a bitter cold.

Brooklyn- 58Degrees, 2:14, 5/22
PERFECT Running weather, but this was a couple weeks after the Paris Marathon. Sadly, my hip started acting up...and thus began injury season... I've been nursing an injury- been to doctor, PTs, ice baths...u name it, i have done it. Luckily, the bad race turned out awesome, as Jackie set a Half Marathon PR.

Queens- 85Degree, 2:34, 7/24
OMG, possibly the HOTTEST half marathon EVER in life. 85 degrees @ 5am is just wrong. This summer has been unbelievably awful for training...absolutely horrible. This half proved to be all of that and some more. The only redeeming part of this race was hitting the Jersey Shore afterwards.

Bronx- 70Degrees, 2:17, 8/15
Sweet lord, the course...imagine a figure eight, over and over...with hills n between. This was by far the half with the most number of hills...all at different places...At some point, it just started getting silly. The only good part of this was due to all the turns, we got to see all of our team mates and friends along the course... Pain is still around, need to re-evaluate treatment plan ...

ANYWHO...Marathon training continues, the temperature has finally gone back to normal levels. Now, the mileage gets fun...ohhh YEAY....more to come peeps, more to come...

OHHHH Right, ONE more borough..Staten Island- 10/10...

Altitude running- yeah, not fun

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 239px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ghSJNjRUzdg/TF9hzFFsAFI/AAAAAAAAKgs/VJGjAxtEWZI/s320/Tamal.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5503224799837290578" />

Ohhh, wow!! NYC marathon is 90 days away. This is the time when the training starts getting interesting-and not in a good way. This blog entry is partially brought to you by the fancy new iPhone. Slightly bored on the last 2 hours of a long days of flying and here I am writing my blog somewhere over somewhere. Spent a glorious week with my family in the little crazy country -Ecuador.

I am going to be honest and admit I ran ONE DAY, one single day in a week in Ecuador. The deal goes -altitude kicks your ass, so the first 3 days are out and then there's the ramp up to a normal distance. I managed one run and several walks around Quito's lil version of Central park with my mom. There was the obligatory run/walk before cyrano breakfast- possibly the yummiest fresh baked bread, organic coffee, and fresh juice EVER! I think Ruth allowed the daily croissants in an effort to launch her "Vanessa move back to Ecuador already" campaign. More to come on that.

Since this blog is well about running, here's the pathetic play by play on my single attempt to run while at 9,900 feet above sea level. See girl run, see girl run slower, see girl hyperventilate, see girl almost pass out, see girl find her mommy to take her pulse and make sure still living, see mother laugh her head off, see girl completed defeated and finish walk/running. Hahaha. Scene, exit stage left, thank you folks.

My pathetic attempt at running was made worse by the presence of the national police crew who were also training on the track. I actually felt good at first, was in my groove, had the cool looking gear, never travel sans Garmin. And then as running often does, humbles the living crap out of you. I kept trying to run my normal speed, looking the part but couldn't. For once it wasn't my body saying "hmm, yeah no, not going to happen. Please try again later," it was my heart racing like a formula one car! I tried to push through it bc well I am a runner and the slightly competitive personality of mine couldn't give up so miserably. I was getting housed by most of the people on the track, I kept wanting to scream- really I can run, am not a slow poke, training for my third marathon, really I am a runner. Haha. There I was feeling slightly foolish, I could barely run- but Iooked good trying. Lol

I would say I was surround by the Zen runners, those who without all the bells n whistles- they throw something on, tie laces and out the door. They were out there doing the same thing - arms moving, left foot, then right foot, controlling breathing- pushing themselves throughout another workout. Ohh, except they were actually able to run, haha. I saw a foreigner approach me and give me the look- every runner knows it- the look that says" I feel your pain, am there with you, and good luck," all without a single word. He too was geared up but barely moving at a pace that could be called running- I was walking. Lol. And there it was the community of runners, they are everywhere- ready to give you the look you need to make you feel like "a runner."

Those who know me, know I am a slightly confused Chica when it comes to community and feeling like I belong. I think that's why running is so important to me, it is the single pls e where I am me, as I define myself- not by passport, nationality or something else. I may never win a race or a marathon- but am out there doing the same as the other 40+thousand insane people who take pleasure in running 26.2 miles bc we can!

So Top Ten- Ecuador Running Experiences
10) lil lady selling fresh squeeze juice from real fruits on the track-awesome.
9) 2nd lil lady selling chochos y tostado on the track, also awesome. It's fried corn kernels and some protein legume thing- yumm. Talk about recovery meal.
8) all of Quito is one big hill training ground, making Harlem Hill look like child's play, Boston training anyone?
7) Runnin n seeing a group of Japanese baseball players leading a baseball camp for niños de la calle (homeless or abandoned kids) AWESOME and hilarious bc they didn't have a common language
6) getting my ass kicked by a guy w a giant beer gut, awesome. No matter where I run, I get beat by these guys. Lol, I could blame the altitude but not even worth it
5) running and seeing at least one of the soccer teams junior leagues training on the same course- CPHs (central park hotties) you have major competition.
4) dreaming of croissant, coffee, and fresh squeeze juice every am- would motivate my ass every morning.
3) daily perfect running weather- though the locals do not really like running when it drizzles or goes below 60- SPOILED
2) lunch is the biggest meal of the day, allowing for maximum food consumption post am long runs. Full meal includes: soup, entree, dessert, fresh fruit juices, and topped with coffee
1) Andean cuisine is a marathoners dream, all carbs, all the time. Potatoes, corn, rice, fresh exotic fruit.

And now back to Central Park and the Bridel Path...

Ohhh, I smell Marathon Season again.....

HELLO my dear friends and family members,

I KNOW you've missed my blog entries about running, running, and more running. HAHAHA....but it is BACK. I know, i know...WHY??? I don't know to be honest. So as I read the last blog entry (yes, early Dec 09), the answer to that question starts to formulate.

I read my entry, and I could almost feel the energy and euphoria from Marathon Sunday. Having had qualified for NYC Marathon 2010 on my own, I was a bit apprehensive about joining Team for Kids- the fund-raising, the time commitment, the no turning back once I hit submit.... To be honest, it took some time to sign up for the 2010 TFK team.

Reality is I could run the NYC marathon on my own. I ran and trained for the Paris Marathon with a group of friends, no team support, no greater good- not ideal but it can be done. The turning point was earlier this spring. I ran a local NYRR race as a running buddy (more to come on that story) and was paired up with a young woman in her sophomore year in HS.

At first we were quiet (my silence due to one too many drinks the night before), but as running tends to do, we started sharing. We actually had many similarities; immigrant parents, uber conservative curfews, love of Garcia Marquez and Mana, hatred of hills on a run, having more guy friends than girl friends...etc. As we were finishing the race, we approached a lovely DOWN hill...she turned to me and said "wow, this is my first race and I am going to finish...I never thought I could. Do you mind if I sprint to my friends who are waiting over there."

My first thought was YES please- I am still feeling the cervezas, go for it...Second thought and more importantly- her comment reminded me why I joined Team for Kids. We live in a time that is cutting after school programs, eliminating gym, and growing childhood obesity- this charity attacks all of these issues and more. Her comment was so matter of fact, but it touched me deeply. Team for Kids organizes her after school program, and on that Sunday it helped her reach a goal she thought impossible and share it with her friends. Really- that's what life is all about no?

Running and Marathoning have changed my life in so many ways, I could attempt to articulate but you all would stop reading :) I CAN tell you that training for my 3rd marathon has NOT being easy- more self doubt than ever, body ailments that remind me I am in fact NOT built for this, emotional breakdowns during races, HORRIBLE races, etc. BUT I am doing this for something other than personal achievement- I am helping raise funds for FANTASTIC charity that changes the lives of children EVERY day through the simple act of running.

I hope you all will help me raise funds for Team for Kids and give kids throughout the USA and abroad the experience of a life time. So please donate to the above link or http://www.runwithtfk.org/Member/PublicPage/2624.

In the meantime, you can read all about my attempt for a 3rd marathon...the highs, the lows, and all in between.

So more to come- blog updates will include the Paris Marathon, Physical Therapy trials, sneaker sizing, I fought Van Courtland and it won, number of doctors visits to date. Basically will be taking my FB Updates in the past few months :)

Well, noches and LOVES YOU alll...

CRAZY-1 month post BEST Day of My Life

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ghSJNjRUzdg/SxXlIYyOw5I/AAAAAAAAIaQ/CA6XwI7jpm4/s320/IMG_4865.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5410482459610366866" />
So- am watching the Biggest Looser tonight, and the final challenge is the Biggest Looser Marathon. It's funny how life comes full circle. Feb 2008, I went home(Ecuador) 25lbs heavier than I am today (maybe 20..it's been a fun time this last month) and I got an up and down stare from Grandma Chabi. She was right, I was overweight and unhappy. I hid behind properly tailored clothing and fabrics, but I knew the person I saw in the mirror was NOT the person I wanted to be. So, it was either re-runs or new season...and I saw those contestants and thought...shoot- if these guys can run, so can I...and SO began the slow road to what is arguably the BEST Day of my LIFE!

It started with a single loop around the reservoir- 1.3 miles. THAT was tough...hahahaha...to think that's a warm up now...And so the journey continued, 1 loop, 2 loops, outer loops, the 4 mile outer loop, the 6 mile outer loop. Soon it was 5Ks, 10K, 15Ks, and then the Philly Half Marathon. I still remember the feeling of crossing double digits- it was somewhere along Fairmount Park- Kelliher there w/ the doggie...cheering me on, saying...GIRL u can see the art museum and then BOOM- I heard the rocky theme...done and done...I knew a half marathon was my sweet spot, but I wanted a bigger challenge- the big ONE, NYC MARATHON...i volunteered the at the 08 NYC Marathon, mile 26...AWESOME experience, saw all of the people living out what I could only dream of...I saw these crazy bright green jerseys-Team for Kids, everyone seem to not only finish the race, but did it w/ a smile. I signed up for Running classes, started giving up happy hours for running class and early am runs. Met some incredible and awesome friends- who kept telling me I could do it- the marathon that it. Ran a couple more half marathons and then I got the lil bug...the MARATHON bug...and then boom- Team for Kids...you know the rest, you've read the rest.

Marathon day was undoubtedly the BEST day of my life!!!! It was a roller coaster of emotions- and that's even before the race started. The race itself was amazing- the crowds, the emotion, the lil kids along the course giving you high-5s... It's been a month and I feel like it was just yesterday. It was 4 hours and 27 mins and 56 secs, but it felt like a New York Minute...The Verrezzano rocked, Bklyn was AMAZING, 59th st bridge will KICK your ass, 1st ave brought me to tears, seeing my friends along 1st ave was amazing and helped me through the "WALL"...ohhh, the wall, I hit saw it, i hit it, I conquered it...Steph...I owe u my finish..., the BRONX and Coldplay's La Vida...CRYING like a baby...harlem brought me to my knees- kindda, 5th ave hill- FELT nothing...last 3 miles a BLURR and the fastest of the 26.2 journey through my hometown...Finish line- i can't even describe the emotion, the feelings, seeing the finish line and knowing that I was going to cross it and achieve what was...a dream, a goal, a reality, and now a memory.

The marathon changed my life, in more ways that I could even explain or articulate. One of my team mates put it best- it brought me back to life. It reminded me that I could do ANYTHING, I could achieve ANYTHING, and that there's NOTHING that could hold me back, not 26.2 miles, pain beyond words or the mental games i had to play so as to NOT quit in the Bronx or Harlem.

The biggest losser contestants keep saying,look at me NOW- LOOK at me NOW...and I agree with these guys. I ran the best race of my life- not on just on Nov 1, but the months of training, crap workouts, Nacho, the self doubt! It was nothing more than discipline and passion for something and i realize it was for me- for the person I wanted to be and on Nov 1- the person I became. The Asics phrase I choose for my Times Square debut was Good Bye- OLD ME!!! I

And so-this blog has come to an end...KINDDA...because I crossed that finished line, NOT saying NEVER again, but rather...I can't WAIT til Paris. That's RIGHT people...I am running the Paris Marathon- 2010...April 11th...YAHOO...so the name of this blog will change to VANE RUNS PARIS..YAHOOO....As soon as I figure how to do this..

So come Jan 1, I will begin the 2010 running blog-heheheh...stay tuned..

TWO DAYS Peoples....TWO DAYS....

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 160px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ghSJNjRUzdg/SurYOiRvb_I/AAAAAAAAINw/vA9BQM-uc7c/s200/JErsey.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5398364847587946482" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 160px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ghSJNjRUzdg/SurX6EdibYI/AAAAAAAAINo/tr4bkbzG3vg/s200/Insipration.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5398364495986978178" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 160px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ghSJNjRUzdg/SurX6DxuBVI/AAAAAAAAINg/5jWgSejpE-c/s200/Insipration.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5398364495803188562" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 160px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ghSJNjRUzdg/SurX5_G6b-I/AAAAAAAAINY/Yg1tTDsScr8/s200/EXPO.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5398364494549905378" />
OMG, I cant even begin to explain the excitement....not even close...I went to the Marathon Expo yesterday w/ my girl Jackie. So, it's time for you to choose your spots and get ready to cheer!!

Now, not to be the usual control freak- that I am...there are general guidelines about cheering- sounds weird BUT trust me, all runners will thank you...

The suggestions are from Runners World- a Runner's handbook of a magazine...

* Coach them on what to expect. Most non-endurance athletes think marathoners are a bit crazy and when they see you struggle, it may scare them a bit. Let them know you've trained well, and explain that as the race progresses you may get fatigued (OK, you will get fatigued) and even look exhausted. It is all part of the journey.

* Coach them on what to say. There's nothing worse than a spectator yelling "you're almost there!" at the 16-mile marker. You've got to love them for being there and cheering, but don't let this be your family and friends:) Give them a list of fun and motivating one-liners to yell at various points on the course. For instance: During miles 1 to 12, a simple "Woo-hoo!" works well. There are so many people and everyone is feeling so strong at this point, any noise will make them happy. Miles 13 to 17, it's always good to hear, "You're looking strong!" because you still may be at that point:) Miles 17 to 23 can be a no-man's land and a good time to hear, "One mile at a time -- you can do it!" And finally, miles 23 to the finish requires a little more finesse and comfort -- e.g., "Less than a 5K to go! Think your way to the finish line!" Oh, and it is OK to yell, "You're almost there, however the rules specify that they must be standing within sight of the finish line!"

SO HERE are the SPOTS:

Mile 8- Team For Kids Cheering-Blkyn.
4th Ave @ Corner of Pacific(1 block from Atlantic ave and Flatbush
Subway- N, R to Pacific
Estimated Arrival- 11:40am

Mile 15- Team for Kids Cheering-Queens.
Queensboro Bridge @ Crescent Plaza
Subway- 7,N,or W to Queensboro Plaza or E,R,V to Queens Plaza.
Estimated Arrival- 12:50am

Mile 17/18- VANERUNS NYC CHEERING- Look out for Mom carrying a BIG pic of ME!!
95th & 1st Ave, LEFT/WEST SIDE of 1st Ave
Subway- 6, to 96th st.
Estimated Arrival- 1:10-1:20pm

Mile 20.5- Team for Kids Cheering-Bronx.
Gramham Triangle-138th St & 3rd Ave
Subway- 6, to 138th St and 3rd Ave
Estimated Arrival- 1:30pm

Mile 22/23- VANERUNS NYC CHEERING- Look out for Mom carrying a BIG pic of ME!!
95th & 5th, EAST SIDE of 5th.
Subway- 6,to 96th St
Estimated Arrival- 1:50-2:00pm
If you come to one, PLEASE COME here, I will need you- THIS will be the WALL

MILE 26.2- ok...NO ONE will see me here...Mom will find me @ the designated Team for Kids Section for some LOVE and Caring on Mama Ruth can give...
I will see ALL of you at the after marathon party!!!

PARTY TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I know, it's still a long distance but it not nearly as mentally challenging as the runs the last 6 weeks or so. I still approached this run with the same ritual as the longer runs- bagel guy visit/conversations.

The running fairies kept the rain away, which was a BLESSING b/c it was COLD- 38degrees when we started. Hmm, YEAH...not ready for winter and definitely NOT ready for rainy/cold runs. We ran the briddle path-which after a HORRIBLE 7mile run on a treadmill during the week- was GLORIOUS!!!! We were running the normal path, when we saw the first signs of Marathon prep...Trailers and spectator bleachers...WHAT!!!!!!!!!! Not going to lie, i did visualize that finish line...and my heart was racing.

It's funny, everyone who has run a marathon tells you- the preparation is now done, taper and enjoy the moments leading up to the big day. In NYC, it is IMPOSSIBLE to remain calm. Everywhere you go, there are posters, signs, billboards w Marathon. The official marathon course banners are going up. I stood on 1st ave w/ my TFK fam on our way to a post run brunch and we were all uberly excited and visualized what would be our mile 16-17.

YAHOOO....next on the preparation:

1) Cut out alcohol and junk food for the next 2 weeks...including celebratory Phillies winning cervezas and wings :)
2) Personalize Jersey- Not shying away from attention- red sparkly letters
3) Separate out Marathon gear-
4) Physical Therapy (sore hips), Sports Doc Apppt, and Reg doc appointments.
5) Finalize Vane Runs NYC cheering sections for all of you to plan ur cheers
6) Remain healthy and positive...

BESOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

20 DAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ran w/ my girls again- Stephanie, Lauren, and Ally. We've formed a nice little group, similar pace and similar love of random conversation,etc. We got started on Cherry Hill- the post-marathon meeting place. After some warm up, stretching, and good morning conversations and we were off....After a quick pit stop, and a slight detour which added another mile to our run- we were off. We were running through the NYC streets- avoiding construction, little dogs, strollers, and the cabbies- ohh the cabs. At the same time- we got smiles, nods of acknowledgment of our training, and the occasional truck honks :) If this is what we get from the people during a training run, CAN NOT wait until marathon...

The bridge was interesting- never knew it had an incline up and down- mental note- CHECK. First avenue was fun- some familiar places, some new ones- a couple of people doing the walk of shame- it was early sat am. I can not imagine 1st ave lined with thousands of screaming people...EEEKKK...visualized the moment, almost tripped on uneven pavement :) Past 96th, empty but UBERLY friendly people. Up towards the Willis, walked up and down the stairs- and off to the Bronx. I kept thinking- so this is where the 6 goes!!! Heard NY Empire State of Mind- AWESOME, needed it! ohhh, Madison ave bridge. And Harlem- a sweet older lady asked us if she could jump in and join our group! CUTENESS!!!! She wished us well on our run! Seeing complete new sights of Harlem, mental pictures taken- as this will also be the sight of the "Wall"!!!! Fifth Ave- i had heard of the slight incline- eeekkk, even after 12-13 miles you can feel the slope. I can only imagine the pain @ mile 21-22. Up 5th Ave, into Engineers Gate, down the loop, up the bottom loop, and UP the hill towards Tavern on the Green. We crossed the virtual finish line, which in 20 days would turn into a reality.

We did it!!!!!! Ok, NOT really...but we now know what to look out for, what to expect, and more importantly how to overcome pain, exhaustion, and self doubt. We are ready for this!!!!!!!!! Props to the Marathon Mktg team- LOVING the phrases...seeing them everywhere...

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://vanerunsnyc.blogspot.com/2009/10/20-days-amazed-and-inspired.html' title='20 DAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bib numbers are important for NYC Marathoners, as it is the official start the time frame count down. So on Nov 1st, 2009- 10:20, I will cross the starting line for my FIRST MARATHON....

TWENTY FOUR DAYS!!!!!!!!!!!! Holy cow- i'm not even sure if I can articulate just how I feel. NYC has ING Marathon Mktg poster/signs/subway poster-everything. It is almost as if the city is splattered with all things marathon, only increasing the energy and enthusiasm for all of us running on Nov. 1.

I have my outfit picked out (of course!), sneakers purchased and worn in JUST right, ordered my fav GUs and Lemon-Lime Gatorade (same stuff that they will serve on course), meals planned and ready to go, pre/post marathon activities SET, and will be sending out designated VaneRunsNYC cheering sections. So to answer I'm I ready- HECK yes...I've put in the training miles (over 450miles logged so far), learned to endure pain in places I did NOT know I even had, and have learned to tune out the silly lil voice that keeps saying- WHY, dear mother, WHY do you want to do this...

So what's left to be done!!! FUNNY how 12 miles is no longer a "hard" run. Now, now...it's not that I approach it like it's nothing- but it's just not as scary as in the beginning or the recent runs.

The team organized a "field trip" to the Manasquan Reservoir in NJ. Now, I have been accused of RARELY leaving the Island of Manhattan- so to think that I would travel to NJ to run-hahah- feel free to laugh away!!! So Sat am- nice and early 7am @ Tavern on the Green. The team is ready and assembled- a small crew this am. And then we see the bus- a BIG YELLOW School bus. I think the last time I was on a BIG yellow bus, might have been my senior year lacrosse games. So we load up the bus and go on a mission to find a rest room @ 7am...NOT an easy task...long story short-we ended up IN tavern on the green...and I cant share the details of our adventure through the back and kitchen- to keep our awesome new friends from getting into trouble :) I know the reviews are tough...but all I can say is their bacon smelled AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!! :)

So after 1.5hrs, a few wrong turns on the highway, we arrived...parking lot! and then - a BEAUTIFUL lake surrounded by woods. The running path was AMAZING- 12 miles were awesome...The miles went quick, since we were just observing the scenery, saying hi to the other people in the path (I KNOW...we arent in NYC, that's what peeps do :) I took control of pace setting- 9:45-11:00 group...we agreed to run 10-10:10s. My sis would have probably warned my awesome running group- i'm bossy..haha..but we did exactly that.. :) You guys ROCKED!!!

Finished the run, had a picnic lunch w/ the team, some pixs, and then back on the bus...It was AWESOME, relaxed run, beautiful scenery, awesome TFKrs, and shout out to Madrigal for reliving the back of the bus-teenage years.hahhaa... love ya girl...

The rest of the day continued to be a running love fest :) Post run cervezas w/ some TFK peeps, YUMMY/YUMMY dinner made by runner/chef extraordinary Dimitri- Madrigal and I POLISHED off pretty much EVERYTHING, and a TFK HH.

This AM- I volunteered for the NYRoad Runners Marathon-Tune Up race. Handing out pretzels to those who finished the LOVELY 18miler, in a LOVELY dark, rainy, and coldish day. Man, it was NOT a fun day to running a marathon Long Run. I did NOT want to go today- combination of 3hrs of sleep, COLD rain and dark. But I remembered the half-marathon insanity- which was apparently related to volunteers not showing up. I have to say- i got a LOT of thank you from the runners- they shared their appreciation for our efforts. However, there were also a lot of runners who complained about not having bagels- REALLY!!!!!!!!! So If ur reading this and are a runner- next race...say hi and thank the volunteers. :)

20 MILER Down, 39 days to go...fighting a cold-AKA CHANCHO

Ohhh SICK days...sick DAYS....back in school- they were a blessing...You get to stay home, watch a lot of TV, and yummy mom's cooking... The grown-up NYC version- lots of Law & Order and DVR lists, seamless web does the cooking, and small apt....

So- here I am, sick and in bed...so on the headlines

All started w/ an AWESOME 20miler on Sunday...It was awesome!!!!!!!!!! Yeah, there was pain- right around mile 17-when I dropped the water/fuelt belt thing, had to stop, bend down to pick it up and keep on running....YEAH, so much easier said than done...I thought I was going to pass out. It felt as if my feet had just stepped into cement and I was stuck...But thanks to my awesome running partners- Stephanie, Lauren, and Ally- I kept on running. The first 15 miles were BEAUTIFUL. We started the run in Bklyn, over the Brooklyn Bridge, on to Seaport, up to Staten Island Ferry, Battery Park, up the West Side Highway to the base of the bridge and back down. All of this under the amazing BLUE skies, perfect weather-crisp and cool..The views were STUNNING and the group dynamics amazing. It was at the turn around point that things got a lil bit more entertaining.

We realized that do to our numerous pit stops along the road, we were ok on timing, but knew we had more to give. I am the unofficial- pace keeper...in other words I yell at those who try to run faster than the agreed upon time...but around mile 17, we decided to run our last 3 miles at a faster pace...We finished the 20 miler, tired but not exhausted and ready to pass out...It was an awesome feeling. My longest run EVER, EVER in life...To think in a few weeks-6.2miles more and ING MARATHON-conquered!!!!!!!!!!!

BUT then CHANCHO- the cold bug decided to find a new home...in ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ghhh, yes...i know it's just a cold, but given 6 weeks left 'til Marathon Day...am not taking any chances...not at this point....SO, am here, sitting in bed and updating you alll...

A million and one thanks...

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ghSJNjRUzdg/SrQIWK8jl8I/AAAAAAAAH9U/DCZCVV7nn54/s200/IMG_4427.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5382936631603075010" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ghSJNjRUzdg/SrQHaQVdwAI/AAAAAAAAH9M/_hl68-ev_sg/s400/IMG_4429.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5382935602257575938" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ghSJNjRUzdg/SrQFoelZDLI/AAAAAAAAH9E/XyFGvoQivbI/s400/IMG_4446.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5382933647577386162" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ghSJNjRUzdg/SrQE7N8IvnI/AAAAAAAAH88/4NKwdgqU_iI/s400/IMG_4476.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5382932870015270514" />
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU...Last night a group of awesome individuals, I am privileged to call my friends came out to help me raise funds for Team for Kids.

In a year of firsts...let's add- BARTENDING!!!!!!!!!!! Last night i went from sitting at the bar, to working behind the bar. Let me tell you, NEW appreciation for my draft beers. Apologies to those who got their early b/c I was still learning...hahaha...It's funny, after all the crazy experiences I've had- i felt that awful.."ohh, crap- what have I gotten myself into?" A MINUTE into learning my way around, a lady asked for a vodka/tonic- a former personal fav- I FROZE...THEN, I made friends w/ Fransisco- who works there...and for the rest of the night- Fransisco helped me out. haahha

Thank you to all who were there...you were patient, obnoxious, sweet, managed to remember i could only take 2 orders of drinks at a time...hahaha...most importantly it was sooo sweet that you all turned down the drinks from the real bartenders and asked for me!!! Apologies I couldn't talk to all of you, but i was WORKING IT!!!!! haha...I hope you all had fun and enjoyed the HH drink specials :)

A huge shout out to the TFK crew...Let the Patron love flow beyond Nov1....

45 DAYS- WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!

SO...Some of my avid readers of this blog have been requesting an update...kids, kids...I'm trying to maintain SOME sort of normal life...and not let running take over COMPLETELY...THAT being said...

Apparently September is "Monster Month" in the running world- as per the latest issue of Runner's World...For most of us running a Fall Marathon, September is full of weekends of LONG runs and weekdays of speed and recovery. In essence the LAST month of HARD training, tapering will soon set in. For my non-running friends- tapering...when u begin to cut back the miles in prep for the BIG day

Funny, b/c up until a few days ago...September was the start of school, back to crazy work mode, finding my autumn clothes- and the search for the PERFECT pair of boots...hehe...But now that I'm training for the Marathon, I see it EVERYWHERE- the "Monster Month."

I see people doing their long runs- you know the look- the poor soul who is DRENCHED in sweat, usually wearing a fuelbelt, minimal gear, and the look in their eyes...the-really- i'm I supposed to do another hour of this...

I was running in Central Park over the weekend w/ my running partner Baviksha. Rock star she is, was doing her 20miler and I my recovery 5. We randomly met in the bridle path, and I ran the last 5 w/ her. At some point in our run we both saw one of the above mentioned runners- but he was bent over along the road. Now, in the past I will admit- unless he was passed out I might have just kept on running. BUT knowing his pain, we stopped and asked if he was ok. He was- he had hit the wall and just needed to rest. Once he told us he was fine, we kept running. A few miles later, he ran up next to us and thanked us for checking in on him and let us know we had helped him get through the wall. It was a nice feeling to be honest...We are all bonded by the pain and glory of this crazy endeavor..

So today I continued my preparation towards M-day:

1) Bought the pair of sneakers I will be using during the marathon....they are ON their way.

2) Bought more Gatorade accelerate mix- the stuff they are giving us on the course...given my stomach problems- I need to train my stomach.

3) Bought some OBNOXIOUS BIG, red, bright iron on letters to put on my bib. Now- i'm beyond psyched about this awesome achievement. The miles are awesome, but more importantly i felt GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!! After Nacho-I started having some serious doubts my ability to run the Marathon. For a good two weeks, I could barely finish a training run without serious pain and feeling like I wanted to pass out. Once the body goes, the mind goes with it and EVERY insecurity began to take over...I MEAN every insecurity- running and not running related. Had it NOT been the for the team, I doubt I would have gotten over it. No one really knew I kept freaking out, and in a way this probably helped. I just kept on going b/c well- I wanted to see my new friends...haha...the social side over took the running. BUT soon I overcame the insecurities and honestly just started running...and I started to feel GREAT!!!!!!!!!!

After Friday's 16, I felt great. Sure I was feeling pain- hips, legs, etc...but that's just part of the drill, but not the type of pain that would have caused me to stop. My AWESOME training partners (Bhaviksha, Maggie, and Stephanie)- we are soo supportive and met up w/ me @ 6:30 on their day off...How AWESOME is that!!! I had another few miles in me...which is AMAZING...

Saturday- I met up w/ more running friends (Sondra, Jennifer,and Matt)...ROCKSTARS they are, had completed 10 miles when i saw them on the Bridle Path...I met them up and ran my recovery 5...Along the way- ran into more people from the TFK family- all of us knew the task..16 miles or bust..hehe. Some previous TFK members would stop waive and cheer us on- mind you we hadn't met them...but you can't miss the TFK Green. We would get the occasional- "Yeay TFK" from strangers...

It is funny- in a city notorious for its anonymity, here we were saying hi left and right. And that's the beauty of this- the team, community, and social aspect of such a selfish sport. Yes- the miles may be mine, but NO way I would have been able to achieve them w/o my team mates...

SO Yes, I realize that I will have to run the same distance I covered in 3 days- all in ONE day...but....I have NO doubt I will cross that finish line Nov. 1. YEAY!!!!!!!! Nacho and my insecurities will be left in dust!!!!!!! GO TFK...

HAVE YOU DONATED YET???? GO DO IT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

2 Month to Marathon day.....

Hey all- So the countdown is OFFICIALLY started, the training has started to get longer(read-harder) and I think, I'm logging on more miles per week running than commuting to work-ha!!!

But it also means that the contribution countdown is here and I need your help!!!!!!! I am slightly over 50% of my contribution goal. If you've donated- THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!! If not- there's still time but NOT TOO much- contributions are accepted up until Mid-October.

Most of the funds raised (82.6%) goes directly to the New York Road Runners Youth Services, which bring the much needed running-based fitness and health programs. A contribution of $50 covers the cost of one child's participation in NYRR Youth Services and Programs for an entire year. So, why don't we give a child the gift of running for a year.

I'll do the physical part- run and train for the NYC Marathon and you guys click above and contribute. :) Remember all donations are tax deductable!!!

Thanks again!!!!!!!!!!!
Besos
Vane

64 Days....WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Again-my obsession with the daily countdown JUST highlighted the fact that hmmm- YEAH i'm really doing this. Many of you have told me on a consistent basis that I am INSANE...Insane for deciding to run the Marathon, insane for running when its hot, cold, rainy. So, I decided to share the following, which will only confirm that i'm a little cooky.. ;)

Those who know me, know that i'm borderline OCD. So I thought I'd confess to my night before a long run routine.

1) Stop at Citerella's and pick up Turkey Meatballs
2) Swing by Agatha & Valentina and pick up their fresh-made pasta, tomatoes, and basil.
3) Pick up bananas at the fruit stand in front of Duane Reade
4) Stop at Duane Reade and pick up water, gatorade, tissues, or admittedly a gossip magazine.
5) Unpack all the groceries and start to cook the pasta, make a simple sauce.
6) Dinner serve with some trashy TV.
7) Once dinner is finished watch more bad TV, check Facebook and Flotrack.
8) Layout the clothes I will be wearing for the long run, pack my bag w/ suncreen, gu's, gatorade, hats, bodyglide, etc...
9) Get ready for bed...and good night

AM Routine:
1) Wake up at least 2 hours before meeting place or race
2) Eat a banana on my walk out the door
3) H&H stop for a plain bagel w/ peanut butter and small coffee
4) back home for a 30-45min nap
5) dressed and out the door....

HAHAHHAHA...I HAVE PROBLEMS...I KNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's Saturday Night...do you know where your running friend is???

AT HOME....getting ready for bed :) Will be making the 2nd attempt at a long run this weekend. Had to scrap today's running plan, as Nacho- the stomach bug was still acting up. GHHHH...this is SOME strong lil bug here- HEHE...

So...I thought i'd update you on progress:

Mile runs since TFK program started: 226 miles
Number of running shoes: 3 (recent purchase-ASICS)
TOTAL Funds raised $1,375- HALFWAY there....

If you haven't donated just yet- check out the link at the top of the blog...it will direct you to the donation site- ANY amount is appreciated and Tax Deductable.

Thought I would share the following: This was posted on Flotrack (think Facebook for runners) hahahhahaha

You know your a runner when:

• your first thought when you look at the weekly weather forecast is, “When can I fit in my runs?”
• you have more running clothes than regular clothes in your laundry pile.
• you’ve lost a toenail. And you tell people, “It’s not that bad.”
• you smirk when non-runners ask you, “So how long is this marathon?”
• you have a drawer full of medals and other race souvenirs that you’re not sure what to do with.
• you go into Starbucks more often to use the bathroom than to actually buy coffee.
• you no longer make fun of fanny packs because your running belt looks very similar (although cooler) to one.
• you’ve used an old race T-shirt to wash your car, dust furniture, or clean something else.
• your treadmill has more miles on it than your car.
• you get an invitation to a wedding and you automatically think about what race the date will conflict with.
• you have dreams about showing up to a race late or not wearing any clothes.
• you’re not embarrassed to wear spandex.
• the salespeople at your local running shop know you by name.
• you’re always hungry.
• you know how to take a cup of water from a water stop without choking on it or spilling it all over yourself.
• at least one of your web site usernames or email addresses has the word “run” or “runner” in it.
• you know where your illiotibial band is located.
• you no longer hate port-a-johns. In fact, there have been times when you’ve been very happy to see one.
• you wear your running watch even when you’re not running. (”It matches, right?”)
• you’ve had your running shoes for three months and you know it’s already time to replace them.
• you spend more time researching running routes than local restaurants when traveling to a new city.
• your physical therapist’s receptionist knows you by the sound of your voice on the phone.
• you know where exactly one mile from your front door is (in any direction).
• you know how to correctly spell and pronounce plantar fasciitis.
• you own more pairs of running socks than dress socks.
• when you hear PR, you automatically think “personal record”, not “public relations”.
• you pack more running clothes than bathing suits when going on a beach vacation.
• you have running clothes and an extra pair of running shoes in your car, “just in case.”
• your holiday wish list can be fulfilled at any running or sporting goods store.
• one of the first things people ask you when they haven’t seen you in a while is,”What race are you training for now?”
• you have several drawers dedicated to running shirts.
• you get excited when the new Runner’s World comes in the mail.
• your Facebook or Twitter updates frequently involve running.
• your only recent photos of you alone are race photos.
• you always have your next race on the calendar.
• your runs are sometimes longer than your commute to work or school.
• your running partners know more about your bodily functions than your significant other.

I Finished (err..survived) NYC Half Marathon-Nacho and Friends

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ghSJNjRUzdg/SoyrMVUu9lI/AAAAAAAAH2w/Zceks1V3BaU/s400/185.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5371856683917047378" />
YAHHHHHHHHHHOOOOOOOOOOO TFK kicked some serious ARSE out there. Many, Many of the teammates set some PRs and ran great races. I mean check out some of these pictures...this is AFTER 13.1 miles..

MY half experience...in an almost prophetic nature...the bug I mentioned in the "Tis the Night B4" blog- decided it needed to re-emerge DURING the race. Yes, you heard right...but more about the bug (AKA-NACHO) in a few.

To be honest I don't recall much of the race. I vividly remember the beginning- getting up @ 4:30am and hitting my bagel store. It was a funny group of people at H&H- kids still drunk from the previous night, the police officers (one of whom was a friend of a friend) who were going to be working our event, and my bagel guys. I've known these guys for YEARS, and now they get a kick out of the fact that I am still visiting them at the same time-though now for a pick me up NOT sober me up :)
Met up with w/ my awesome running partner Stephanie and walked to the TFK meeting place. Stretched, got some last minute pointers and we were sent off to our corrals.

It soon became evident that Stephanie and I were in the wrong corrals, but we made the executive decision to hit the porta potties BEFORE the race started (more about Porta Potties later) The problem with starting in a slower group is that it can become mentally and physically exhausting to run slower than "THE PLAN"

Ohhh "THE PLAN"...in running, like in life you have a plan, but life might have something else in mind.

So we continue to stay true to our racing plan-that is until we hit the first water station-NOTHING, NOTHING, NOTHING. That's right you read right-NYC HALF Marathon ran out of water for the first few miles of the course in the HOTTEST NYC Half. Now, for runners water/gatorade is not just a treat, but a necessity. So immediately, THE PLAN, went out the door. We ran most of Central Park without water and/or gatorade-!*(&&*$##@.

We hit Harlem Hill and I showed the hill a thing or two. I LOVE hills, LOVE, LOVE them...it's part torture, part immediate satisfaction. I felt GREAT, in control, I was overcoming the incorrect corrals, lack of water..etc...and then we hit mile 6.

And then I fell apart, COMPLETELY. I felt my stomach just start rumbling in that NOT so good feeling, started feeling a headache, slight dizziness. I knew I was going down and fast- I continued to run, well because that's what you do. Somewhere around mile 7, I told Stephanie to go on- I knew I was holding her back. Stephanie and I had agreed early in the training season that we would push each other, but if one of the two couldn't continue, the stronger person would break away.

And there I was, fading fast, sans training partner and DESPERATELY looking for a porta potty. HAHAHA...The roller coaster of emotions that followed was HORRIBLE. I knew I still had 1/2 of the race to go, and apparently the best part of the race-Times Square. Found the first pit stop (porta potty) and felt a bit better...kept running...felt horrible...pit stop again...run a little, feel horrible, hit Medical Tent (They told me I could stop- SO NOT an option,is what i though as I poured salt into my tongue and washed it down w/ gatorade). This HORRIBLE cycle repeated it self a few times. I dont remember times square, turning towards West Side highway, cheering fans...NOTHING!!

I remember telling myself, you can NOT quit, CAN NOT quit. Then thinking why not, it's just a race am not going to hit the time I wanted and if I stopped right now the world would not end and NO ONE would think less of me...well, except me. I was near tears at mile 10-feeling the pain, exhaustion, lonely and disappointment from a horrible race. I looked down at my gear- i looked like a wet rag...and started to laugh. I checked my uberly competitive self out and decided to just finish.

I saw my buddy Jackie up ahead, and ran just a little faster b/c I was needing to tell SOMEONE the ordeal I was going through. She was BEYOND supportive and I can remember which one of us made a joke about it, but I knew I was going to be ok. EVERYONE knows that a Nacho (stomach bug) induced race is in the cards at some point in this sport...haha...it's funny actually. I saw more TFK coaches and team members (shout out DANI), I was feeling ok and having fun again. The fun did not last, as the pain was getting worse. I knew my body was just NOT happy, so I told Jackie to go ahead- I would catch up. AND THEN I STOPPED....

I was WALKING...OMG, I HAD NEVER walked before...EVER, not on a training run, hungover run, still drunk run, NEVER. And there I was...mile 11 walking, alone, w/ BAD stomach pain...Tears were building up but then I could hear Ruth (Carajo- NO LLORES- DAMN it, stop crying) and I told you so (Ruth had told me NOT to run.) So I stopped myself from allowing those tears...and remembered what Esteria (our TFK coach) had said, make it about small milestones...So I decided OK...just walk miles 11-12 and see what happens after that..

At mile 12, I knew w/1.1 miles left, I could run...I picked up the pace and ran faster...I crossed the finish line 2:19hrs later.

And found my TFK Peeps, ohh was SOO happy to see familiar faces and friends. I shared the Nacho story several times...and what I heard was...YOU FINISHED...and they were right...I FREAKING FINISHED despite EVERY part of my body TELLING me to stop and quit. I celebrated with the team, the accomplishments of everyone...it was AWESOME. I have to say that while this was possibly my worse timed race- it has taught me more than any other. I tested my physical and mental limits and know that if I'm strong enough to get through the NACHO Race, I WILL GET through Marathon Sunday... :)

If you are still reading this....BLESS YOU and have you donated???? hehehe

'Tis the Night Before The NYC Half Marathon....

Alright, so the NYC Half is tomorrow...this will be my 3rd half marathon, but for some reason I am nervous about this one. I am not sure why exactly...here's some thoughts:
1) I was on vacation in Quito for the last week- trained but didnt exactly follow the schedule...9,000 Ft. above sea level was AWFUL...I needed to keep reminding my mother, that I was not a Kenyan runner and that in fact I am an Andean creature, who has live at sea level most of my life....She kept trying to tell me that this was GREAT practice for me and that all of the Kenyan runners train at high altitude. While correct, I am SHOCKING not a pro/elite...hahahah

2) Had some sort of stomach bug earlier this week- TMI perhaps...but well, sorry :)

3) This is my first race where I will be a member of a team...wearing the official "NEON GREEN"...I mean glow in the dark, neon green...

4) I think it's more because of all the hype around this half being the gauge of how well you can expect to do during the FULL NYC Marathon. It's SUPER scary to think that no matter how I will tomorrow, in a few months I will have to complete what I will do tomorrow, turn around, and do it again....heheheh

SOOOO....as I desperately try to go to sleep tonight, I want to THANK everyone around me. I KNOW I talk about running non-stop, all day long, and share more random facts about the sport than you ever wanted to know...but this excitement is AWESOME...I can ONLY imagine what "the night before the FULL ING Marathon" will bring..so good, and well...wish ME good luck...

BESOS to all....look out for the FB update. For all the TFK members...Kids, i LOVE YOU all, let's kick some non-bridle path derrier out there...

Ohh the Ice-Bath...and other things

This weekend the team completed the longest run to date- 14 miles (well, according to my Garming it was more 14.4) BUT who's keeping track..haha...Anyways, it was a good run-nothing crazy or out of the ordinary. Run was followed by stretching, YUMMY Brunch, and then wait for it...AN ICE BATH....

According to Runner's World: Cryotherapy ("cold therapy") constricts blood vessels and decreases metabolic activity, which reduces swelling and tissue breakdown. Once the skin is no longer in contact with the cold source, the underlying tissues warm up, causing a return of faster blood flow, which helps return the byproducts of cellular breakdown to the lymph system for efficient recycling by the body.

To the runners/athletes out there-u know the drill. To all others here's the skinny- you fill the tub 2 or 3 bags of ice and then add cold water til its waist deep. I put on a hat, fleece jacket, a LARGE cup of tea, and the latest issue of "Runners World"...and step in to this torture. The first few seconds are BEYOND painful, but after a few minutes it's not so bad. I must look like some sort of crazy person-sitting in a tub full of ice/cold water, but half dressed as if I were going into the Artic...I swear by the benefits of ice-baths...usually for any distance after 13 miles.

This morning I woke up and the legs felt good-not bad for over 2 hrs of running. Then I realized that I was still sore, a feeling that is just part of my day-to-day these days. I guess that's just part of it, learning how to deal w/ different levels of pain. I have another two weeks, until we start running distances i have NEVER reached before, no doubt there will be more ice-baths, pain, etc. All in preparation for Nov1.

NOW this morning, the pain attributed to my hangover- NOT SO PRETTY, nor justified. HAHA...I did however pay for it during my "recovery" run- A WHOLE new meaning to the term "recovery run"...lesson learned, 8 bottles of wine 6 people....will NEVER make running even slightly enjoyable the next day!!!

Well, off to Quito tomorrow- will attempt to stay on the running schedule...hahaha...will let everyone know how that goes....

Things I NEVER knew....but now YOU do...

Tonight's topic in a sec, i've received a good number of questions re: my training.

Longest Run: There's been a GOOD amount of concern, and that's so sweet...This past weekend-12 mile, longest run EVER- 16 miles, March of this year..

Total Miles: 157
Days left 'til Marathon: 95

On to the topic...I attended the Team for Kids Women's Clinic. I left w/ all sorts of previously unknown facts-some of which i will share and some of which I will spare you the CRAZY details... I'm not sure why these 2 stood out, but I was in stitches, perhaps b/c i'm still juvenile and b/c someone actually researched this info. By the way, this was all under the context of Gear Tips for Women-c/o Urban Athletics...hahaha...so here goes...

For every 10 miles you run, your breasts can bounce up to 1mile
Breasts move in a figure eight during running...

There's so many more. But I guess, what was funny or interesting to point out that runners have no problem sharing all sorts of personal stuff with each other. I've shared A WHOLE lot with my runner partners; the good, bad, sad, COMPLETELY mortifying/embarrassing, tragic, frustrating moments over the last few months. I guess it's partially b/c we are stuck with each other for at least 30 minutes. You all reading this know, I can make conversation w/ the wall. But beyond the entertainment, it's a sense of shared goals and accomplishment; team work for an individual accomplishment.

Most marathoners have a mantra, which is supposed to come useful when you hit the wall! I've been looking for one for some time, something that will help me get through the physical pain and move me into some sort of trans-zen like sensation everyone tells me I will experience...so I think it's going to have to be the following two...

1)Breast move in a figure eight during running- b/c well that is SO FREAKING
FUNNY!!!
2) "Hard things take time to do. Impossible things take a little longer." - Percy Cerutty. Somehow, i think after 4+ hours of running...this will be a good one...

100 DAYS 'til MARATHON...

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 250px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ghSJNjRUzdg/SmgvBWmfc4I/AAAAAAAAH2o/33YALmuFbdE/s400/TFK_0718.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5361587056677974914" />
OHHHHH....sweet lord- not being able to sleep this early morning, I decided to play around the internet and clearly stumbled on the ING Marathon Webpage and GASP- what 100 days...
So for my sponsors/supporters here's a quick update:

Money Raised so far- $1,000- THANK YOU to all, on my way to goal of $2,600 for Team for Kids. A president's/leader's hundred days are intensely analyzed and studied. One of my favorite books "100 years of Solitude". Ruth's measurement of being sick- temperature above 100, anything less take Tylenol.

According to Wikipedia- The Hundred Days[1], sometimes known as the Hundred Days of Napoleon or Napoleon's Hundred Days for specificity, marked the period between Napoleon Bonaparte's return from exile on Elba to Paris on 20 March 1815 and the second restoration of King Louis XVIII on 8 July 1815 (a period of 111 days).[2] This period is also known as the War of the Seventh Coalition, and includes the Waterloo Campaign[3] and the Neapolitan War. The phrase les Cent Jours was first used by the prefect of Paris, Gaspard, comte de Chabrol, in his speech welcoming the King.

Hmm...yeah, my aspirations are a little bit more hmmm....grounded- KINDDA. Anyways, 100 days til I conquer 5 boroughs, 5 bridges, 26.2 miles….SWEET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don’t forget to donate :) OK, off for a quick nap before work....

A Sunday Full of Mom is right... Now, Ruth (a former athlete herself) never does anything in moderation- and decides that the entire family should sign up for a half-marathon in Quito, Ecuador. A half-marathon is hard enough but imagine it at 9895ft above sea level!!!!! INSANITY... Luckily, I am not part of Ruth's Masterplan to Health- as I'm living in NYC, and didn't have access to training in similar altitude. ;)

In the months leading to the 1/2 marathon, my mother encouraged (read-pushed) both my dad and sister to join a local running club, join a few local races, and led the family training and nutrition schedules. I would call home and they would give me the play by play of their 5K, 10K, and later 15K training runs- and more than once hung up on me b/c Leo (Dad) had plated one of his legendary brunches.

What I haven't shared up until now is that Ruth- is a double breast cancer survivor. She battled the disease in 1998 and again in 2004. She had a new experimental mastectomy during her first tour of cancer duty (as she often refers to it) The surgery (now common) used her body's fat and muscles to reconstruct one of her breasts. Mind you, prior to the surgery she was under doctor's orders to eat ice-cream, cakes, and fast food- because she didn't have enough body fat- haha!!! The surgery was a success, but limited her inner core strength- as the doctor had to use some of her stomach muscles. The 2nd Tour of Duty- left a more lasting physical reminder, she opted not to have plastic surgery and wears a prosthesis. Running, as you can imagine is tough- due to the lack of core strength and unbalanced upper body. The picture as part of this blog is from a 5K, she wanted to brings awareness to the participants and spectators that a Breast Cancer survivor can run!!! She was later featured in a national fitness magazine, was featured as one of few amateurs in the A Year in Sports

She always used to say to me- If I can run, you have no excuse. I always came up with one; too cold, too hot, work is insane, am tired. All along, I knew she was right. The Zaragocin-Carvajal family ran that half marathon and many other races without me, and soon I began to feel left out. Soo, I started running. We've always been a close family, but running has allowed us to bond on a different level.

Ruth can no longer run, due to a Kidney condition...so I'm running because I can, because it bonds our family together, and because I know it brings a smile to her face when I call her and say...yup, you were right...

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://vanerunsnyc.blogspot.com/2009/07/sunday-full-of-mom-is-right-again.html' title='A Sunday Full of Mom is right...
